Prof. Dr. Sachar Paulus:

  • Security Patterns in Software Engineering: When developing software, many security bugs are introduced in the design phase. The "wrong idea" is often that the developers think that they can solve a security problem by themselves. In the vast majority of cases, there are already existing solutions. Such solutions to common, recurring security issues are called "security patterns." The task is to develop a plug-in for a common development tool (such as Eclipse) to help developers use security patterns.

An appropriate preliminary work may be to model the necessary requirements for the automatic processing of security patterns.

Another work may be to identify and document existing solutions in frameworks, programming languages and libraries for frequently recurring security patterns.

  • Password Security: Passwords are insecure: they can be stolen, guessed or simply hacked by brute force. There are procedures that - theoretically provable - support the generation of good passwords. The task is to develop a web-based software that supports users to generate the most secure passwords possible - without requiring special characters and so on.

  • SAP Hacking: While security flaws involving operating systems, browsers and office documents are regularly mentioned in news and weaknesses are discussed, there is a very important area for users, which is rarely illuminated: SAP systems and applications. The task is to set up an SAP testbed in which you can test and understand current SAP vulnerabilities.
